Give Your Body A Blackcurrant Boost!

Have you ever noticed, that every so often your body screams out for some form of ‘boost’, whether it be a boost to the immune system, a boost of energy, or even a revival boost after feeling run down? Most of the time, we tend to let our bodies reach the point where a boost is absolutely essential, instead of maintaining our levels of goodness on a regular basis to ensure we stay in tip top shape! The main reason for this seems to be a lack of awareness surrounding the most health beneficial foods...

For example, if we told you that the good old British blackcurrant was recently heralded the No.1 Superfruit when compared against other fruits such as blueberries, bananas and raspberries, for their outweighing health benefits and disease fighting components, would you be surprised?

We were so sure that the general public were missing out on the goodness British Blackcurrants have to offer, that we decided to conduct a survey among over 2000 adults. The results confirmed that those surveyed were only aware of a third of the health benefits associated with blackcurrants – in fact only 3% knew that blackcurrants were the number one superfruit! More worryingly, 30% of the respondents couldn’t even identify a blackcurrant, so even if they were aware of its benefits, they may be purchasing blackberries or blueberries instead. What’s more, nearly half of the respondents admitted to never having tried a blackcurrant before, so are missing out on all of the health benefits associated with this wondrous superfruit!

So why are blackcurrants so good for you?

British blackcurrants are renowned and bred for their deep purple colour, which indicates a high level of anthocyanins - important disease fighting antioxidants. These special antioxidants help protect against ageing, joint inflammation, eyestrain, kidney stones, cardiovascular disease, cancer and urinary tract infections. What’s more, they are naturally rich in Vitamin C content to help boost the immune system and fight off the symptoms often associated with the common cold.

How do you eat them?

Aimed with this information you are probably eager to give yourself a blackcurrant boost so to save you the effort of having to conjure up recipe ideas yourself, we have developed a range of tantalising blackcurrant juice and smoothie recipes on your behalf, just in time for the spring/summer season.
